"Emily?
How much more can I care?
How much more can I love you?
How much more can I do?
Your questions just puzzle me.
Lead me on.
Sometimes I wonder,
If you’re talking to me
Or someone I’m supposed to be.
I ask myself, lately,
Time and time again,
What’s going on-
In that mind of yours?
The more I think I know you,
The more distant you become.
Someday,
I just know it,
I’ll come home
And you’ll be gone.
Tell me,
Am I right in this love of ours?
Or am I just a fool?”
She walked over,
The sunlight through the curtains
Making her almost a ghost,
She hugged him,
Kissed him passionately,
“You know I’ve never loved
Anyone as much as I love you.”
He touched her softly
On the lips,
“The sun’s going to be hot,
I’ve got to go.
Today should be the day
We break through and
That well will really blow-
I’ll be back tomorrow
Morning, late.
This will be an all-nighter
I’m sure.
I love you Emily.
With all my heart and soul,
Emily, I love you.”

She had packed the night before.
Hidden her belongings above,
In the garage.
She had made love one last time
With the man she loved,
The man who was, she was
So sure, more like her father-
The engineer-
Than anyone she’d ever known.
She’d been awake all night.
She wanted to be sure.
She couldn’t change her mind.
Her questions that morning,
Voiced out the window,
Into the windcircle,
Were meant more for her
Than the lover she had
Decided to leave behind.
She had to leave.
She loved him more,
As she said,
Than anyone she’d ever known.
He had grown so close to her,
He knew her,
Understood her,
Beyond what anyone
Had been allowed to understand .
Beyond what anyone had been
Willing to endure.
The old fears,
All the pain,
All the years,
The lovers,
The fantasies,
And the tears,
He knew them all.
He listened,
Supported her,
Forgave her,
He always seemed to be there
For her-always.
